You are invited to join five speakers as they explore the art of the natural history book from their distinct points of view:

The symposium will appeal to a broad range of individuals who share a common interest in natural history, including artists, bibliophiles, botanical illustration devotees, designers, educators, naturalists and students. Rare books from the natural history collections of the Athenaeum, the John Hay Library at Brown University and the RISD Library will be available for viewing from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. during the symposium lunch break. A selection of prints, drawings and artists' books will be on view at the RISD Museum of Art as well as an exhibition of Joseph Scheer's work at RISD's Benson Hall Gallery. The Providence Athenaeum is a member-supported library and cultural center established in 1753. One of the oldest libraries in America, the Athenaeum is housed in a 19th century Greek Revival building designed by William Strickland and located on Providence’s historic East Side.
