Message from Betty Rawls Lang, Board President and Richard A. Olsen, Interim Executive Director - September 2004
The Providence Athenaeum received notice that the plaintiffs have appealed the recent Superior Court decision affirming the right of the Athenaeum to sell its copy of John J. Audubon's Birds of America. This action is disappointing. Clearly, the plaintiffs' appeal is without merit. Both the General Assembly and the Superior Court have vindicated the board of directors' decision. The Athenaeum is confident it will prevail and is pursuing options with regard to expediting the sale of the Audubon folio.
Status of Lawsuit - August 2004
Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein has ruled in favor of the Board of Directors of the Providence Athenaeum.

Inquiries Encouraged
In April 2003, the Board of Directors of The Providence Athenaeum finalized the publication of a book commemorating its 250th anniversary, Inquire Within: a social history of The Providence Athenaeum since 1753 . The book was researched and written by author Jane Lancaster, Ph.D.

Karen Philippi's photography and Malcolm Grear's visually stunning design will compel the reader to rediscover the hidden treasures housed within the Athenaeum's walls. The book is available at the library's circulation desk (no phone or postal orders), at select local bookstores and through Oak Knoll Press . Enter 'Providence Athenaeum' in the search box to locate the title at www.oakknoll.com or call 800.996.2556.
