To Support the Athenaeum

Since its founding in 1753, the Athenaeum has relied on the generosity of its members to support the preservation of its historic building, the conservation of the special collections, the general operations and the public programming. We are most grateful for your continued support. 

The Providence Athenaeum's 2007-2008 Friends' Appeal

Giving Cirles - All giving levels include acknowledgement in the annual report. An annual Donor Reception is held to thank those at giving levels of $500 and above.

Elizabeth B. Patten Circle  ($50 - $249)

Teenage volunteer Lizzie Patten raised money for the purchase of Malbone’s painting, The Hours.

Sarah Helen Whitman Circle ( $250 - $499)

Poet Sarah Helen Whitman was courted at the Athenaeum by Edgar Allen Poe.

William Strickland Circle ( $500 - $999)

Philadelphia architect William Strickland designed our 1838 Greek Revival building, his only known work in New England

Zachariah Allen Circle   ($1,000 - $2,499)

Zachariah Allen negotiated the merger of the Providence Library Company with The Providence Athenaeum.  He was also instrumental in contracting William Strickland to design our building. 

Grace Leonard Circle   ($2,500 - $4,999)
Librarian from 1912 to 1941 Grace Leonard coauthored, along with W. Chesley Worthington, The Providence Athenaeum: A Brief History 1753-1939.

Moses Brown Circle   ($5,000 - $9,999)

A founder and benefactor of the Providence Library Company, Moses Brown served as board president from 1801 to 1807. Benefits include the above with a private tour of the Philbrick Rare Book Room (at a mutually convenient time).

Stephen Hopkins Circle ($10,000 and above)
A founder of the Providence Library Company, Stephen Hopkins served as Rhode Island governor for most of 1755 to 1768.  He also signed the Declaration of Independence. Benefits include the above with use of the Athenaeum reading room to hold a celebration (at a mutually convenient time).

Matching Gifts
Many companies will match memberships and contributions made to the library by their employees - some will even match 2 for 1! Please check with your employer to find out if your gift will qualify and to obtain the matching gift form.
